EWP vs Working at Heights (WAH): What’s the Difference in Ontario?

Updated: May 4

If you’re working in construction or at height in Ontario, you’ve likely heard of both:

  • EWP training (Elevating Work Platforms)

  • Working at Heights (WAH) training

They’re often mentioned together...but they are not the same thing! Understanding the difference is essential to make sure you’re properly trained and compliant on the job.

What Is EWP Training?

EWP (Elevating Work Platform) training teaches workers how to safely operate equipment that lifts them off the ground. This includes:

  • Scissor lifts

  • Boom lifts

  • Elevated work platforms

The focus is on:

  • Equipment operation

  • Safe positioning

  • Inspections and controls

  • Hazard awareness

What Is Working at Heights (WAH) Training?

Working at Heights training is mandatory in Ontario construction for workers who may be exposed to fall hazards.

WAH training focuses on:

  • Fall protection systems

  • Harness use

  • Hazard recognition

  • Safe work practices at height

Unlike EWP training, it does not teach you how to operate equipment. Because WAH training is mandatory in Ontario, workers must take a CPO-approved Working at Heights training course before working at heights.

Do You Need Both EWP Training and WAH Training?

In many cases, the short answer is yes. For example, if you are a construction worker using a boom lift, you would need EWP training to learn how to safely and effectively use the lift, and WAH training to ensure you are safety compliant while on the job.

Requirements depend on your job and work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is EWP training the same as Working at Heights?

No. EWP is for equipment operation, while WAH is for fall protection.

Can one replace the other?

No. They cover completely different safety requirements.

Do I always need both?

Not always, but many construction roles do require both types of training.

Can I take EWP or WAH Training courses online?

No. Both courses require hands-on, practical training.
